Toyota eliminates the plastic covers of all its workshops in Spain
It is about 50,000 kilos of plastic waste, which will avoid CO2 emissions
Toyota Spain has decided to eliminate the plastic bags used in the company's workshops and replace them with reusable cloth covers. This measure will eliminate the production of more than 50,000 kilos of plastic waste and will prevent the emission of more than 380 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in the entire network of Toyota and Lexus dealerships each year, helping to minimize their impact on the environment and promote a more sustainable society.
The company will use the new reusable fabric covers to protect the seats of the vehicles that enter the workshop, replacing the plastic ones that were used for this same purpose. The objective is that in May 2019 all the covers that are used in the network are made of fabric. Already by the end of this same year 50% of the protectors that will be used will be of this new material.
Toyota conducted a pilot test in two centers, one Toyota and one Lexus. This pilot test has had very positive results and it has been proved that, in an average dealer, the use of around 8,000 plastic bags per year can be eliminated, avoiding the emission of more than 1,000 kilos of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere for each concessionaire every year of activity. To explain it graphically, it would take 44 oaks and 20 years to absorb that amount of emissions annually.
The cloth covers are reusable, washable and easy to recycle, so their useful life far exceeds the plastic one-time with which seats were protected so far. The use of plastic generates great environmental problems, since it is a material that takes 500 years to degrade, a problem that Toyota will avoid when changing the material of the covers for one more respectful with nature.
In addition, its shorter installation time and better protects the seats than the plastic ones, also offering greater comfort to the staff in their workshop tasks.
